The Mattress Debate

Marriage is funny.
Learning to live with someone else is even funnier.

Although Troy and I dated forever and knew more about each other than anyone else, I knew once we got married and lived together, I would learn even more about him.

I know I've mentioned something I've learned since being married--that he always listens to Pandora on the iPad as he showers and gets ready in the morning.

Some additional things I've learned about him…
(image I got from image.google)

  • He folds his socks by just laying them flat on top of one another and placing in drawer. But since being married and me doing his laundry, his socks are folded like this! The way I've always put my socks away…

He said he'd never seen socks like this before! Blows my mind!
  • He can't go to sleep with our bedroom door open. Not even if its just barely cracked. I tell him the air will circulate our room much better if we could at least crack the door. But nope. He will NOT go to sleep if the door is open.

  • He hangs up his sweatpants in the closet, like he would jeans or khakis. That just makes me laugh.

  • When he gets clothes out of the closet, he takes the shirt/pants off the hanger and leaves the hanger still hanging up on the rack, in the midst of all his other clothes. This drives me crazy because when I wash and dry these clothing items and need to hang them back up in the closet, I have to rummage through all his hanging clothes to find empty hangers to then hang the clean item back up. We've had many discussions on how much I'd appreciate it if he'd remove the hanger from the rack and place it where I keep all my empty hangers… just towards the front of the rack in the closet--that way when you need to hang something back up, you just grab one from that "collection" and you don't have to search for empty hangers. He's gotten better… still a struggle though.
I'm sure there are other little tidbits I could share about what I've learned about Troy since being married… but there is one more. A big one. One we've debated since June.

The mattress with memory foam vs. the mattress without memory foam. How he hasss to sleep on a firm mattress.

So a little background…

When Troy and I first moved in, I forgot to pack the memory foam for our bed. So the first time we returned to H'ville, probably after a month of us being married, I packed the memory foam to bring back to Memphis to put on our bed. Well, thats when I learned that Troy HATES those things, but I LOVE THEM! Troy claims that if he doesn't sleep on a really firm mattress, his back hurts. So when the memory foam made its way to Memphis, he wasn't too thrilled.

So, my sneaky self decided to not put it on the bed when we returned---to just wait a week or so, in hopes that he'd totally forget all about it--then put it on the bed without him knowing.

I for sure thought that I could have it on the bed and he wouldn't be able to tell. Well, I was wrong. The first day I put it on the bed, we were going to bed that night and he layed down and said "you put the memory foam on the bed didn't you?" Busted.

Luckily he didn't demand me to take it off then and there. Instead he let me sleep with my beloved memory foam for about 4 months, but would complain every morning that his back hurt.

Finally he had enough. As I finished up brushing my teeth and washing my face, I get ready to crawl in bed when I realize… this is what my bed looks like (I pulled back all the covers before I took the picture, just so you could see it better)

The little turkey had doubled-up the memory foam, putting my side a solid 5 inches higher than his! SO FUNNY! We actually slept liked this for the rest of the week until I finally agreed to take it off because it looked so silly.

So, for now, I'm sleeping on the firm mattress--until we invest in one of these babies.

A sleep number bed! And you think I'm kidding… haha we will for sure be getting one of these one day. Marriage is about compromise, right?!
