It's interesting to move to a new area where you don't really know anyone.
Its liberating in the way you can run out to Target or Kroger, looking like a total mess, and not have to even entertain the idea that you might see someone you know.
But the funny thing is, not only do you not know anyone, but no one knows you.
They don't know your past. They don't know anything about your character, or your family, or how you were raised, or anything you've done or been a part of to "establish" you or your family's name in the community in which you were raised. Its like a blank slate.
As we've been in the Memphis area, and I've met various people and families… I find myself always saying, "well my husbands in Pharmacy school here"… as if its part of my identity. To tell people that know nothing about me that I'm married to a Pharm student.
I find myself feeling like telling them this credits me as a person. As crazy as it sounds, I feel like when I tell these "strangers before (now) friends" that certain fact, they may have a positive opinion of me. "I mean, surely she's a great, smart, cute, sweet, educated girl if a guy going to post-undergrad, professional school married her." As lame as it sounds… thats my honest, shallow thought. Ha!
And its got me thinking… if I put emphasis on such a silly thing to give me some type of identity to people who know nothing about me--and think its such a great thing to share--how much greater is it to have and know my identity in Christ? And to emphasize, focus, and value that all the more?!
I think everyone can identify with this. Its so easy to think your identity (and identity of others) relies on what car you drive, what clothes you wear, what neighborhood you live in, what school you attended, what grades you made, what "friend group" you're apart of, where you work, even what church you go to, etc.
But THANKFULLY our true identity is in Christ. The Bible says if we believe and trust in him, we are his children and his heirs (Romans 8:17 and Galatians 4:7) and members of God's household (Ephesians 2:19). That's like being Kate Middleton and marrying Prince William… but a million times better! :)
Let us find our identity in Christ, who died a criminals death, to allow us to inherit riches and eternity in heaven with him!
And just because I do love my little future pharmacist… he's brought these goodies home for me. I love seeing what he creates in lab… and they're legit products. You could really use them!! That just totally fascinates me!
(I'm addressing these in my own terms… he labels by their real names) We have liquid ibuprofen, icy-hot, lip balm sunscreen, anti-fungal dog treats, and hormone replacement suppositories!
